Special Need! Volunteer as a Repertoire Boutique Manager in the Opera Boutique

This volunteer manages the business operations of the boutique-the most important fund-raising project of the Guild-for a two-opera repertoire (i.e. Fall, Cullen, Winter, Spring). Experience working in a retail management role, or cashier experience with the Opera Boutique is required. Each repertoire has two operas, which typically cover approximately 12 performances over a three-week period. There are always at least two managers working during any given performance.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating the movers during set-up to ensure the boutique is set up in the lobby correctly
  • Coordinating the volunteers to tidy up the displays and refill backstock
  • Giving the volunteers a final walk through to acquaint them with the merchandise and answer questions prior to opening
  • Assisting customers with purchases
  • Opening and closing the registers
  • Closing and settling the credit card machines
  • Coordinating the volunteers and movers to breakdown the displays after closing

You will be required to arrive at the Wortham two hours before opening, and usually leave about an hour after closing. Parking is provided for the performances that you work. For more information, contact Jerry Bohannon at 281-392-4082, or email at jerrybohannon@earthlink.net.

Docents

The guild continues to receive a number of requests for programs from Houston area schools. We need more volunteers to introduce schoolchildren to opera and to build the audience of tomorrow. If you enjoy talking to kids, then this program is for you. We'll provide the script and the video, you provide the enthusiasm.

If you don't yet feel comfortable presenting to kids, then you could help with scheduling.

See the description of the Docents program for more information about the exciting and rewarding effort.

To volunteer, contact Adelma Graham, Chair, at 713.528.3639 or email her at Adelmasg@aol.com.
